ADHESIVES

BEVA 371

Package contains the proper resin mix necessary to formulate one gallon of liquid Beva. Instructions included. No shipping restrictions, not flammable.

Beva 371, Gel and D-8 adhere to each other in all forms of application.

Instructions for mixing the dry resins for BEVA 371

BEVA 371 FILM

For easy application, BEVA 371 solution has been sprayed into film form for easy workability without the use of flammable solvents, and in applications where liquid Beva may not be suitable. Transparent, ideal for relining dark canvas with Mylar or Stabiltex. Very smooth, will not trap air bubbles, not tacky at room temperature, non-toxic, non-flammable. Most often activated by the use of heat thus eliminating the need for ventilation of evaporated solvents. 1 ml. thickness suitable for mounting of lightweight papers and fabrics. 2.5 ml. thickness is for use on canvas and heavyweight materials. The 2.5 ml is now also available in 54" wide rolls, eliminating the need for multiple strips of adhesive on larger surfaces. This product has the same properties including reversibility as BEVA 371 solution.

BEVA Instruction Sheet

BEVA 371 SOLUTION

The only adhesive specifically formulated to meet the requirements of art conservation professionals, and since 1970 is the most widely used over the world. This material has been extensively tested and published in professional literature. Developed as a relining adhesive, it has now been found to have numerous other applications, such as mounting of paper to canvas, textile to textile, canvas to wood. Can be applied by brush, roller, or thinned and sprayed into place. BEVA can be removed from absorbent surfaces using hexane or acetone, provided these solvents do not damage the artwork involved. It is also reversible by heat and low-aromatic solvents.

This material ships as a hazardous material.

BEVA D-8 DISPERSION

An aqueous, non-ionic dispersion which consists of ethylene vinyl acetate emulsified by a volatile solvent material which evaporates during drying, without leaving a residue. Application in dispersion permits the use of resins of still higher viscosity and greater flexibility than BEVA 371, however, BEVA D-8 requires more aromatic mixtures for removal than the 371. BEVA D-8 dries to a clear, colorless film which is not soluble in water. Extensive testing found D-8 to be removable in toluene and exlene. After prolonged accelerated aging its solubility increases, and BEVA D-8 becomes soluble in alcohol as well, indicating that during aging the breakage of cross-links exceeds their formation. A mixture of toluene, alcohol, and mineral spirits will remove D-8 from porous materials without leaving a residue. Useful for strip lining. An aqueous emulsion, it is sensitive to freezing, and should be stored and ordered at times with this in mind.

ADHESIVES GEL

BEVA GEL

An aqueous dispersion of acrylic and EVA resins. In its pure form, or diluted with water, it is an excellent water-based adhesive dispersion, easy to apply, with good slip, and adhesion to a very wide range of surfaces. When partially dried, BEVA® GEL turns into a strong contact adhesive with excellent adhesive to canvas, polyester, and Beva-coated surfaces. To achieve this, high-molecular polymers were incorporated in its formula, which give it the desired tackiness and retention of solvents. For these reasons, it dissolves only slowly.

When fully dried, BEVA® GEL turns into a heat-seal adhesive, with the same low-activation temperature as that of BEVA 371 (60-65°C, 150-160°F). BEVA GEL, BEVA 371, and BEVA D-8 adhere to each other in every form of application.

BEVA® GEL can be reversed with water, toluene, xylene, isopropyl alcohol, or ethanol. This facilitates clean-up and corrections. Spraying with any or all of the above solvents reverts the dried adhesive back to the gel form, and makes it reusable as a contact adhesive. If the effect of any of these solvents is undesirable or the time required objectionable, the solution is to coat the surfaces to be joined with a layer of BEVA® 371 Solution first. This makes it possible to remove the lining using heat or naphtha, if and when necessary.

MATTE VARNISHES

BEVA MATTE VARNISH

An entirely new, extensively tested formulation. It contains a matting agent which is suspended in this solution, and may require some shaking prior to its use. BEVA® Matte Varnish can be applied by spray or by brush with equally good results and can be mixed with BEVA® Finishing Varnish in any proportional to achieve intermediate degrees of gloss. BEVA® Matte Varnish can be removed with purely aliphatic solvents during the first few weeks following application with a minimum effect on the in painting, both old and recent. Thereafter, the varnish remains soluble in naptha or low-aromatic solvents for about 20-30 years of normal exposure to light, such as found in museums or private collections. Accelerated aging tests of BEVA® Finishing Varnish and BEVA® Matt Varnish indicate that after 50-100 years, high-aromatic solvents, or mixtures of low-aromatic solvents with isopropyl alcohol will remove these varnished with out difficulty, particularly if applied on top of a thin layer of Acryloid B-67.

This product as well as the BEVA® Finishing Varnish can be combined in varying proportions to create degrees of matte or gloss finish.
